Interfaith Dialogue Spotlights Nantes Tribute to Algerian Martyrs

The Diocese of Nantes in France is scheduled to host a special commemoration from October 12 to 18, 2026, honoring the martyrs of Algeria. This event marks 30 years since the assassination of the Tibhirine monks, among others. Organized by the diocesan Service for Relations with Muslims, the week-long tribute will focus on the memory of the Beatified and the promotion of interfaith dialogue.

A core aspect of the commemoration is the emphasis on Islamo-Christian dialogue and the spiritual dimension of the martyrs' testimony. The initiative seeks to associate the spiritual and human families connected to the events, remembering a legacy of friendship, fidelity, and evangelical presence within an afflicted community. The organizers aim to highlight a message of peace, drawing from authentic spiritual traditions that reject violence and sacralized hatred, a sentiment echoed by Pope Leon XIV.

The program includes an exhibition titled "The Brothers of Tibhirine, Witnesses of Mercy," alongside film debates centered on Xavier Beauvois' movie "Of Gods and Men." Additionally, videoconferences, arranged by the Pastoral Health service, are planned for September and October, further exploring themes of interreligious dialogue and peace. This comprehensive commemoration underscores the importance of dialogue in rejecting violence.
