Iraq Invites Algeria to Reactivate Joint Economic Commission

Iraq has formally reiterated its invitation to Algeria to reactivate the Iraqi-Algerian Joint Commission and the Businessmen's Council. This initiative aims to deepen economic cooperation and open new prospects for partnership between the two nations. The Chargé d'affaires of the Iraqi Embassy in Algeria, Anwar Said, expressed his country's strong desire for these bodies to convene in the near future, noting that the last meeting of the joint committee took place in Baghdad in 2000.

Anwar Said emphasized that the bilateral relationship between Iraq and Algeria is founded on a shared history and firm mutual positions, offering extensive opportunities for development across various sectors. He highlighted Iraq's historical support for the Algerian revolution, noting it was among the first nations to back the movement and the first to recognize the provisional Algerian government, even establishing an office for it in Baghdad. These enduring ties, he underscored, have remained stable and unaffected by political changes or ideological shifts over the decades, being deeply rooted in the consciousness of both peoples. Cooperation also extends to academic exchanges, with increasing numbers of students from both countries pursuing studies in each other's universities, and mutual support in organizations like the Arab League and other international forums.

Iraq's call for enhanced economic partnership aligns with its broader governmental focus on transitioning from military to economic and developmental cooperation with strategic partners, following the conclusion of the international coalition's mission. Baghdad is actively working to establish a secure environment for both local and foreign investment, leveraging its resources and strategic geographical position. The government's vision includes efforts to diversify the economy, boost production and export capabilities, and position Iraq as a global energy hub through increased oil production, gas field development, and expansion of refining and petrochemical industries. Iraq also champions initiatives such as the "Development Road" project, envisioned as a strategic corridor for trade, investment, industry, and energy, linking East and West, and open to partnership with friendly nations to build regional stability through shared economic interests.
