Mascara Province Sees Eight-Fold Legume Production Surge

The wilaya of Mascara has reported a substantial increase in legume production for the 2025-2026 agricultural season, according to data from the Directorate of Agricultural Services. Production reached 6,587 quintals, representing an over eight-fold rise compared to the 797 quintals recorded in the preceding season, significantly enhancing the region's agricultural output.
This marked growth is largely attributed to favorable rainfall experienced in the area, particularly during February, March, and April. The report specified that the total area dedicated to dry legume cultivation spanned 643 hectares. The recorded production comprised 5,375 quintals of chickpeas, 630 quintals of dry broad beans, 480 quintals of dry peas, and 102 quintals of lentils, with an estimated average yield of 12 to 14 quintals per hectare.
Looking ahead to the 2026-2027 agricultural season, the Directorate of Agricultural Services, in collaboration with the Wilaya Agricultural Chamber, has initiated a specialized program aimed at further developing the legume sector. This initiative includes organizing awareness-raising field visits for farmers to inform them about state-provided support mechanisms, such as subsidies for seed acquisition, which amount to 6,000 DZD per quintal for lentils and 7,000 DZD per quintal for chickpeas. The program also features ongoing training and guidance sessions designed to improve the quality of dry legume crops for producers.
