OAIC Purchases 600,000 Tons of Wheat from Global Market

Algeria's Office Algérien des Céréales (OAIC) has finalized a purchase of 600,000 tons of soft wheat from the international market. This acquisition follows a previous order of 500,000 tons in August, bringing the total recent procurements to 1.1 million tons. The latest transaction, with prices ranging from $326.5 to $362 per ton, is part of ongoing efforts to ensure stable national supplies.

According to insights from traders reported by Reuters, the newly acquired wheat is expected to be sourced from multiple countries, including Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Argentina. This diversification of suppliers highlights Algeria's strategy to bolster its food security amidst a volatile global cereal market, characterized by rising prices influenced by international conflicts. Algeria stands as a significant player in the global cereal trade, planning for 8.5 million tons of imports during the 2026-2027 campaign, positioning it among the top three global importers.

The strategic procurement of soft wheat is crucial for Algeria, where it is a primary ingredient for essential foodstuffs like bread and flour, both of which are subsidized by the state to remain accessible to the population. Deliveries for the recently purchased 600,000 tons are anticipated to occur in two phases, from December 1st to 15th and December 16th to 31st, 2026, with an additional month for transport if sourced from South America or Australia. These timely acquisitions underscore the nation's commitment to maintaining consistent supply and addressing domestic consumption needs.
