President Tebboune’s Support Lauded for Europe-Algeria Green Hydrogen Route

The second ministerial meeting on the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SoutH2 Corridor) concluded in Algiers with the signing of a joint political declaration of intent. Representatives from Algeria, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Tunisia formalized their commitment to strengthening regional and Euro-Mediterranean cooperation on green hydrogen. This declaration underscores a collective dedication to the energy transition and the security of supplies, with Algeria positioned centrally in this strategic initiative.
The project highlights Algeria's evolving role as a key player in the clean energy sector, extending its traditional function as an energy provider to Europe into new, low-carbon frontiers. Italian Minister of Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin specifically lauded President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's support for the SoutH2 Corridor, emphasizing the crucial importance of this future energy facility. The declaration also provides for the creation of a secretariat for technical project support, to be accompanied by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Envisioned to transport up to 4 million tons of green hydrogen annually from Algeria to Europe via Italy, Austria, and Germany, the SoutH2 Corridor could meet approximately 10% of Europe's anticipated green hydrogen demand by 2040. The approximately 3,000-kilometer route is planned to traverse Tunisia and the Mediterranean, utilizing existing natural gas transport infrastructures after necessary adaptations and modernization. This project is poised to diversify European energy supplies and foster robust energy exchanges between North Africa and Europe.
