Sahel Stability Efforts Center on Algeria’s Role

Italy and Niger are intensifying their military cooperation to enhance stability across the Sahel region. This strengthened partnership explicitly acknowledges Algeria's central role as a key partner in these critical security initiatives. Italy notably stands as the sole Western nation to maintain a military mission in Niger, underscoring its commitment to the region.
The decision to deepen this collaboration stems from several strategic considerations, including addressing regional security challenges such as terrorist networks and various criminal trafficking operations prevalent in the Sahel. Furthermore, the cooperation aligns with the broader economic interests surrounding the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, which is set to connect Nigeria to Algeria via Niger. In this significant energy project, Algeria is positioned as a central pivot, linking a major African gas producer to global markets, thereby reinforcing its role as a potential European energy hub.
The bilateral cooperation, formalized under the MISIN mission, primarily focuses on training programs outside of EU or UN frameworks, specifically avoiding the deployment of Italian units for direct field operations. Italian officers in Niamey have cultivated strong relationships with their Nigerien counterparts, with the Italian presence being well-received. Italy's sustained engagement, even as other Western actors have withdrawn, is seen as conferring a privileged foreign partner status, supporting broader economic and political collaboration that aligns with Algeria's pursuit of economic complementarity between Africa and Europe, where its geographical position is a key asset.
