UN Committee Backs Sahrawi Self-Determination with Overwhelming Vote

The United Nations General Assembly's Fourth Committee recently approved a draft resolution on Western Sahara by an overwhelming majority, with 152 votes in favor, 2 against, and 7 abstentions. Maaelainin Lakhal, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic to the African Union, described this outcome as a diplomatic and political victory for international legitimacy and for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence.

The resolution reiterates that the issue of Western Sahara falls under decolonization matters, identifying it as one of the 17 non-self-governing territories listed by the United Nations. This affirmation reinforces the fundamental principles of the UN Charter concerning decolonization and underlines that international attempts to promote plans of occupation did not deter the international community's adherence to these principles. The outcome of the vote also highlights the international isolation of the occupation's position and provides renewed political and legal impetus for UN efforts in the region.

Further, the resolution reaffirms that the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) was established to organize a self-determination referendum, not to manage the existing situation or legitimize an occupation. This places legal responsibilities on all parties involved, including the UN Security Council, which is expected to discuss the matter. The vote refutes claims that the decolonization file for Western Sahara is closed and underscores the international community's ongoing responsibility to empower the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.
