UN Health Agency Hails Algeria’s Role in Pandemic Pact, Local Medicines

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has lauded Algeria for its significant contributions to global health initiatives. The commendation followed a meeting between Dr. Ghebreyesus and Ambassador Idriss Latrach, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and international organizations in Geneva. Dr. Ghebreyesus specifically praised Algeria's leadership role as head of the African Group during crucial international negotiations.

Central to the WHO Director-General's praise were Algeria's efforts in advancing and completing negotiations for the supplementary annex to the Pandemic Agreement. This vital annex establishes the Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing (PABS) system, designed to ensure equitable access to pathogens and the fair distribution of benefits derived from their use. Algeria's commitment in this area directly supports international efforts to bolster global preparedness and response mechanisms against future pandemics.

Furthermore, Dr. Ghebreyesus also acknowledged Algeria's dedicated investment in enhancing universal health coverage for its population. The Director-General particularly highlighted Algeria's strategic initiatives to promote local production of medicines and its ongoing development of a robust system for drug regulation and control. These internal advancements underscore Algeria's comprehensive commitment to strengthening its national health infrastructure and contributing positively to global health security.
