Algeria’s Trans-Sahara Railway: The Most Ambitious Infrastructure Project of the 21st Century

Algeria is pressing ahead with full determination to implement the Trans-Sahara Railway project — Algeria-Tamenrasset — stretching to the southernmost borders of the country, in what could become the most significant infrastructure undertaking in African history this century.

The railway will connect Algeria’s Mediterranean ports with Saharan and Sahel nations, reaching deep into West Africa. The project creates a massive economic zone linking six nations: Algeria, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Mali, and Burkina Faso, with potential extensions to Mauritania and Central Africa — serving a combined population of 360 million people.

The Algeria-Tamenrasset rail line will dramatically strengthen Algeria’s economic leadership across the continent, mirroring in ambition China’s legendary Belt and Road Initiative. Algeria also carries a historic legacy worth reviving — the ancient caravan routes that once connected Africa to Europe across the Sahara.

Combined with the north-south highway corridor, this project will fundamentally transform trans-continental trade and cement Algeria’s role as Africa’s indispensable economic gateway, dzwatch has learned exclusively.
