Constantine Youth Repair Local Roads, Inspire Civic Action

In El Khroub, Constantine, a local youth-led initiative is transforming community engagement through practical action. Nofel Bouchareb, a 34-year-old vocational institute graduate, began this effort by addressing a road hazard on a busy thoroughfare. What started as a simple, individual act of filling a pothole quickly evolved into a volunteer initiative called "Nasalhouha DZ," attracting significant attention within the region and beyond. This movement reflects a notable national trend of Algerian youth leading field projects that foster active citizenship and positive participation in public affairs, demonstrating a commitment to serving society and improving quality of life.
The initiative, conceived by Bouchareb with friends Abdelmalek and Issam, extends beyond merely repairing roads. The name "Nasalhouha DZ," which translates to "Let's fix it, DZ," embodies a broader message of promoting a culture of improvement across various aspects of life, including behavior, ideas, and the environment. The team selects intervention sites based on citizen reports received via social media and phone calls, followed by on-site studies to determine priority. Operating with modest equipment, such as brooms, pickaxes, and cold asphalt, volunteers wear reflective vests and adhere to safety standards, ensuring the repaired sections enhance road usability. The initiative views itself as a complement to, rather than a substitute for, public institutions responsible for road maintenance, striving instead to revive a sense of citizen participation.
"Nasalhouha DZ" has garnered widespread appreciation from drivers and local residents, who commend this initiative as a growing sign of civic consciousness among Algerian youth. These grassroots efforts are particularly significant as public authorities are also actively developing comprehensive programs for road maintenance and rehabilitation across the country, further enhancing road infrastructure and safety. The organizers aspire to expand the initiative's scope to other regions of Algeria, encouraging more young people to engage in volunteer work and community service. They emphasize that the initiative serves as an invitation for every citizen to become part of the solution and contribute to improving their surroundings and society.
