European Partners, Tunisia Sign Green Hydrogen Declaration in Algiers

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received energy ministers from Germany, Austria, Italy, and Tunisia at the El Mouradia Presidential Palace. This high-level meeting in Algiers culminated in the signing of a ministerial declaration, marking a strategic acceleration for the SoutH2 Corridor project. Senior Algerian officials, including Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies Mourad Adjal, were present during the discussions, which underscored Algeria's commitment to cross-Mediterranean energy integration.

The SoutH2 Corridor is envisioned as a transcontinental infrastructure designed to transport green hydrogen from Algeria to Central European industrial centers, specifically Germany, via Tunisia, Italy, and Austria. Spanning over 3,300 kilometers, the project is recognized by the European Commission as a Project of Common Interest. It aims to deliver approximately four million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, largely through the repurposing of existing natural gas pipelines. European representatives highlighted Algeria's role as an indispensable and reliable partner for Europe's energy transition and decarbonization strategy.

This initiative is central to Algeria’s national strategy for clean hydrogen development, leveraging its extensive solar potential and existing interconnected gas transport network. The signed declaration strengthens the political and technical framework for cooperation, with plans to establish a dedicated secretariat, supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, to facilitate intergovernmental collaboration and private sector involvement. Algeria aims to position itself as a primary exporter of low-carbon energy to the European market, transforming its domestic renewable capabilities into large-scale industrial projects that generate enduring value and anchor Mediterranean energy cooperation.
