Potato Prices Drop to 90 Dinars After Algiers Market Checks

Algerian trade services in Algiers have intensified their field operations across markets, aiming to oversee vegetable and fruit prices and counter unjustified price increases, particularly for widely consumed goods. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to protect citizens' purchasing power, ensure market stability, and uphold the regulations governing commercial activity. The comprehensive monitoring operations extend from the wholesale market in El-Kalyptus to various retail markets throughout the capital, where inspectors focus on traders' adherence to price displays, compliance with applicable regulations, and the entire marketing chain of agricultural products from wholesale to consumer.

A significant focus of the supervisory teams has been on potatoes, a staple for Algerian families. Inspectors have verified traders' adherence to capped prices, specifically ensuring that the retail price does not exceed 90 dinars per kilogram, while countering any unwarranted increases. Field visits conducted by the head of the Bouzareah trade inspection department, along with teams from 13 other inspection departments across Algiers, confirmed that traders are complying with the ministerial directives on potato price caps. This commitment from traders has been observed to contribute positively to the stability of potato prices and the protection of consumer purchasing power.

This intensified supervision forms part of a larger program to enhance market controls across the capital, implemented in accordance with directives from high national authorities, the Minister of Domestic Trade and Market Regulation, and the Governor of Algiers. The objective is to ensure the effective application of price regulations and monitor their respect by operators. These field trips also allow for the observation of all stages of agricultural product marketing, from wholesale to the consumer, to identify any commercial practices that might lead to unjustified price hikes. The consistent monitoring, coupled with improved product availability, has resulted in a slight reduction in prices for certain vegetables, including potatoes, and white meat this week, providing a measure of relief to consumers as supervision continues.
