Finance Law 2027 to Include Wage Rises, Preserve Purchasing Power

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has directed the inclusion of substantial wage increases within the draft 2027 Finance Law, alongside a firm decision to impose no new taxes that could affect citizens' purchasing power. These orientations, which also aim to combat the high cost of living and target a Gross Domestic Product of $400 billion, are viewed as a fulfillment of commitments to bolster the social conditions of employees and workers, particularly for middle and low-income households.

The President's decisions have garnered widespread praise from various national organizations and associations. The General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA), along with unions representing university professors, education workers, and public health employees, welcomed the move. They underscored that these measures reflect a clear commitment to enhancing social peace and safeguarding social gains, asserting that the continuous improvement in purchasing power, initiated since 2024, is a significant achievement.

Economic experts also lauded the directives, viewing them as a consolidation of the state's social dimension within its economic policy. They noted that combining wage increases with the absence of new taxes on essential goods is designed to improve disposable income, enabling households to better manage living costs while stimulating demand and consumption. However, experts and union representatives alike stressed the vital importance of accompanying these increases with strict market regulation mechanisms, robust price controls, effective measures against illicit speculation, and support for national production to ensure a tangible improvement in purchasing power.

These strategic decisions underscore a commitment to maintaining financial stability through diversified national income sources, rather than relying on new fiscal burdens for citizens. The focus remains on enhancing productivity, optimizing distribution networks, and fostering a strong national economy to ensure that the anticipated wage adjustments translate into a real and sustainable improvement in the quality of life for all Algerians, further solidifying the social front within the country's public policies.
