South Africa, Algeria Ministers Launch Partnership Implementation Meeting

Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola co-chaired a significant ministerial meeting in Algiers on October 15, 2026. The discussions focused on advancing the strategic partnership between the two nations and coordinating positions on major regional and international diplomatic issues. This gathering followed up on the outcomes of the 7th session of the Algerian-South African High Joint Cooperation Committee, held in Algiers in December 2024, which adopted a declaration for strategic partnership.

Minister Attaf highlighted the deep historical ties between Algeria and South Africa, rooted in shared struggles, sacrifices, and solidarity, noting this legacy inspires their ongoing relations. He emphasized the need for a renewed impetus in their partnership, transforming political understanding into tangible economic and institutional cooperation for the mutual benefit of both peoples. Among the key areas identified for deepening cooperation were enhancing political dialogue and coordination, particularly on issues such as Palestine and Western Sahara, and working collaboratively within the African Union and United Nations to strengthen Africa's voice and promote global governance reform.

The ministers also sought to deepen economic and commercial cooperation, leveraging their substantial and complementary resources, industrial capabilities, and expertise. This includes fostering stronger links between economic institutions, encouraging investments, identifying concrete projects to create employment, and improving air and sea connectivity alongside logistics. Furthermore, discussions aimed to diversify sectoral partnerships to encompass energy, hydrocarbons, mining, manufacturing, agriculture, digital technologies, and innovation. The meeting underscored the importance of transitioning from agreements and declarations to achieving measurable results, including investment in scientific research, academic collaboration, and joint initiatives in artificial intelligence, digitization, and renewable energies. Algeria's objective for the meeting was to conduct an objective assessment of progress, identify any remaining challenges, and agree on practical steps forward to build a more united, prosperous, and influential Africa.
