Minister Krikou: Algeria to Share Desalination Expertise in Malta

Algeria is set to participate in an international meeting concerning seawater desalination projects and the valorization of brine solutions, scheduled for November 3-4 in Malta. Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kawthar Krikou, confirmed Algeria's involvement during discussions with Tatiana Hima, Coordinator of the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) under the Barcelona Convention. The forum aims to bring together Mediterranean countries to discuss these critical water management issues.

This participation provides Algeria with a dual opportunity: to learn from technological techniques and experiences adopted by other nations in this field, and critically, to share its own expertise in seawater desalination plants and the valorization of brine with the participating countries. The discussions between Minister Krikou and the UN Coordinator, conducted via videoconference, specifically addressed the project for valorizing brine solutions generated by seawater desalination plants, alongside monitoring the progress of cooperative projects aimed at protecting marine and coastal environments.

Algeria's engagement in this Maltese meeting is part of ongoing cooperation initiatives between its environment sector and the Mediterranean Action Plan, operating within the framework of the Barcelona Convention for the protection of the Mediterranean Sea from pollution. A significant national project focusing on the valorization of brine solutions from desalination plants is currently under study in coordination with the hydrocarbons sector, through the Algerian Water Desalination Company (SEA). This highlights Algeria's commitment to advancing sustainable technical and technological mechanisms for water security and environmental protection.
