Ali Haroun Laid to Rest at El Alia Cemetery
Mohamed Ali Haroun, an independence war veteran and former member of the High State Council, was laid to rest on Sunday afternoon at El Alia Cemetery in Algiers, following his death on Saturday at the age of 99.
The funeral was attended by Azouz Nasri, president of the Council of the Nation (the upper house of parliament), and Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, along with members of the government, national figures, representatives of independence war veterans and their families, relatives of the deceased and many citizens.
A day earlier, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune offered his condolences to the family, saying he had learned of Haroun’s passing “with deep emotion and great sadness.” The president hailed an intellectual who bore witness to the events of his time, and a distinguished lawyer and jurist who defended Algerian detainees and activists before French courts. He also recalled Haroun’s commitment to the nation, from the Constituent Assembly to the highest responsibilities of the state.
