Putin Hails Russia-Algeria ‘Reliable Alliance’ at Moscow Summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin characterized his country's relationship with Algeria as a "reliable alliance" on October 27, 2026, during the 8th Summit of the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries (GECF) held in Moscow. Speaking at the high-level event, President Putin emphasized the long-standing and friendly nature of the ties between Russia and Algeria, noting the value placed on ongoing communication and information exchange, particularly in the energy sector. He had previously highlighted Algeria as a close friend and ally, citing excellent relations across numerous areas and their dependable partnership in economic cooperation.

Algeria participated in the Moscow summit through Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, who represented President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and delivered the President's address to the assembled delegates. The summit served as a platform for leaders to advocate for enhanced cooperation among gas-exporting nations, aiming to ensure stability in global gas markets amidst geopolitical influences. Discussions also centered on the importance of bolstering investments throughout the natural gas value chain.

The event marked Algeria's handover of the GECF presidency to Russia, following its successful hosting of the 7th summit in Algiers in March 2024. That previous summit culminated in the adoption of the "Algiers Declaration," a significant document that solidified natural gas's strategic importance within the global energy security framework. The ongoing relevance of the "Algiers Declaration" was further acknowledged by the GECF Secretary-General, underscoring Algeria's influential role in shaping international discourse on energy policy.
