Algiers-Tamanrasset Railway Nears $14.6 Billion Project Launch

Algeria is preparing to launch its largest railway undertaking, a monumental 2,036-kilometer line set to connect the capital, Algiers, with Tamanrasset in the country's far south. With an estimated investment of $14.6 billion, preparations for the commencement of works on the most significant segments are now complete. The Wali of El Ménéa recently oversaw the final on-ground details, confirming readiness for the project's initial phases.
The extensive project, which is being funded by both the state budget and external financing from the African Development Bank, builds upon the already completed section between Algiers and Laghouat, spanning over 300 kilometers. Plans are in place for work to begin on an additional 924 kilometers, with tenders launched for a 651-kilometer portion. Key upcoming sections include Laghouat-Ghardaïa, Ghardaïa–El Menéa, El Ménéa–PK 216, and Tamanrasset – Moulay Lahcen. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has affirmed the target for the train to reach Tamanrasset by the end of 2028.
On-site readiness for the launch of the project was verified by Wali Mokhtar Benmalek during a visit to El Ménéa, where he inspected the designated launch site and its associated logistical base. This inspection confirmed that all necessary technical and logistical arrangements are in place to support the project's implementation. Several Algerian enterprises, including Infra Rail, Cosider TP, and SNTP, are involved alongside Chinese groups CRCC and CCECC, aiming to emulate the successful and rapid completion of the Ouest Béchar-Tindouf mining line despite challenging natural conditions.
