Algiers Leads Africa, Ranks 34th Globally in Broadband Index

Algiers has achieved the top position in Africa and 34th globally in the Gigacity Index 2026, which assesses the performance of fixed high-speed broadband networks in major cities worldwide. This significant classification, based on an evaluation by the British telecommunications and technology research firm Omdia, included Algiers among 50 prominent global cities and placed it in the Silver category.
The city’s ranking indicates its strong performance compared to other African capitals, surpassing Cape Town, which placed second in Africa, as well as Cairo, Nairobi, and Lagos. Globally, Algiers also outperformed major cities such as Berlin, Sydney, Istanbul, and Buenos Aires. The report highlighted Algiers’ near-universal Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) coverage, approaching 100%, which is the highest among African cities included in the assessment, scoring 50 out of 100 points in network infrastructure. This infrastructure score surpassed several international cities, including Riyadh, Berlin, Istanbul, and Sydney.
Furthermore, Algiers demonstrated robust network performance with 7% of households benefiting from speeds exceeding 500 megabits per second, and 3% achieving speeds greater than 1 gigabit per second. A substantial 90% of subscribers enjoy a minimum connection speed exceeding 100 megabits per second. Omdia identified Algeria as an emerging broadband market experiencing rapid adoption of fiber optics, a development attributed to a national strategy focused on network enhancement and expansion. This high ranking reflects considerable investments directed towards modernizing telecommunications infrastructure and broadening fiber optic deployment, aligning with the strategic objectives of the Posts and Telecommunications sector.
