Artists Propose Revival of Algerian Comic Characters

A recent tribute meeting honoring the late Algerian comic strip artist Mahfoud Aider has led to calls for the revitalization of the nation's renowned "ninth art" characters. Held at Riadh El Feth Square during the "FIBDA" event, the gathering brought together Aider's friends, colleagues from "El Manshar" magazine, and his family. Participants emphasized the need for new generation artists and writers to re-engage with these iconic figures, ensuring their enduring presence and preventing their lapse into oblivion.
Mahfoud Aider was recognized as a pioneer in Algerian comic art, contributing significantly to various magazines, newspapers, and comic strips across the country. He distinguished himself not only as an illustrator but also as a scriptwriter, reflecting his extensive cultural knowledge and mastery of diverse artistic forms. His involvement in "El Manshar" newspaper was highlighted as an exceptional venture; despite lacking advertising, the publication achieved print runs of 100,000 copies, with its inaugural issue selling 500,000 copies and requiring reprinting. The newspaper, which Aider directed, mirrored national events and even garnered attention from officials, including the late President Chadli Bendjedid, who reportedly did not miss an issue.
Attendees at the tribute advocated for specific initiatives to further this cultural objective. Suggestions included organizing an exhibition dedicated to "El Manshar" albums and compiling a book about Mahfoud Aider's life and work. The renewed focus aims to restore prominence to significant Algerian comic strip characters, such as those from "Maqaydish" magazine, co-founded by Aider, and the figures associated with "El Manshar." This drive seeks to connect current artists with the rich legacy of Algerian comic art, ensuring its vibrant continuity and celebrating the contributions of its foundational figures.
