Bangladesh, Algeria Ink Energy Cooperation Agreement

Algeria and Bangladesh have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for energy cooperation, which includes Algeria exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and other petroleum products to Bangladesh through a government-to-government (G2G) framework. The agreement was formalized in Algiers on Thursday, October 22, following a bilateral meeting between Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Bangladesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Humayun Kabir. This pact is expected to expand Algeria's role as an energy provider in international markets.

The memorandum extends beyond direct energy sales, creating opportunities for joint initiatives such as the development of oil refineries and LNG infrastructure, as well as the exploration of coal and gas fields within Bangladesh. Algerian Foreign Minister Attaf indicated that the Algerian President had provided immediate instructions to prioritize the signing of this MoU, acknowledging Bangladesh's energy demands. Furthermore, Algeria’s Petroleum Institute has expressed interest in providing training and experience-sharing programs for Bangladeshi engineers and technical personnel, aiming to enhance the technical capabilities of Bangladesh's energy sector.

Discussions during the Algiers meeting also encompassed broader areas of mutual interest, including fertilizers, agriculture, textiles, trade, and education, alongside efforts to strengthen people-to-people connections. Both ministers explored avenues for expanding bilateral trade and increasing investment in the energy sector for the mutual benefit of both nations. Algeria specifically conveyed its interest in collaborating on fertilizer supplies, considering Bangladesh's import needs, and expressed a desire to leverage Bangladesh's expertise in revitalizing its textile industry, alongside expanding cooperation in the pharmaceutical and leather sectors.
