Bloc Praises Algeria’s Economic Path and Regional Role

The European Union Ambassador to Algeria, Diego Mezzana, affirmed the European Union's understanding of Algeria's new economic orientation. This policy, which aims to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, particularly gas, was described as legitimate and comprehensible. The Ambassador highlighted that Europe itself is engaged in developing its local industries, suggesting a shared approach to economic development. Despite each side defending its own interests, opportunities for cooperation exist, forming the core of the economic relationship and the partnership agreement.
Ambassador Mezzana emphasized Algeria's pivotal role in the Sahel region, attributing it to the country's geographical position, stability, and regional influence. He stated that Algeria's security and development contributions in the Sahel are essential for Europe, noting the continent's reliance on this role. The Ambassador stressed the need for enhanced coordination and information exchange with Algeria to conduct joint analyses and implement shared actions concerning migration, security, and energy, acknowledging that security issues affecting Algeria in the Sahel have repercussions for Europe.
The European Union expressed its fortune in having an actor like Algeria in the region, believing that joint efforts can help achieve common goals such as stability, economic development, and good neighborly relations. The Ambassador also commended Algeria's initiatives, including the establishment of the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency and the "single window" system, which aim to streamline economic activities. He underscored Europe's strong qualifications for fostering significant economic and commercial integration, especially through investments, citing geographical proximity, established networks, people-to-people connections, and cultural ties as facilitating factors for a framework that respects both Algerian and European sovereignty while advancing mutual interests.
