Unconfirmed reports from multiple sources indicate that the Algerian Air Force is slated to receive additional Su-34 long-range strike fighter jets from Russia by the end of 2026. This ongoing acquisition solidifies Algeria's status as the world's only foreign operator of the advanced Su-34, an aircraft distinguished by having the longest range and largest weapons payload among Russia's currently operational fighters. The procurement is expected to significantly enhance Algeria's military projection capabilities, building on a decade-long interest in these advanced platforms.
The Su-34s are anticipated to replace Algeria's extensive fleet of Su-24M strike fighters on a one-for-one basis, introducing a new generation of operational capabilities. The new deliveries align with recent photographs of newly produced Su-34s in factory primer, suggesting they are intended for Algeria. The integration of the Su-34, with its superior range, precision strike capabilities, and network-centric warfare advantages over the Su-24M, will allow the Algerian Air Force to operate with greater autonomy, offering substantial secondary air-to-air combat capabilities that reduce the need for escort fighters.
This acquisition forms part of a broader modernization effort by the Algerian Air Force, which has introduced three new types of Russian-made combat aircraft over the past two years, including the Su-35 and the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jets. These advancements, including the Su-34, are set to enhance Algeria's long-range operational capabilities, contributing to its strategic influence across Africa. The Su-34's exceptional range capabilities are expected to further support Algeria's military power projection and strengthen its retaliatory strike options.
