Ministry Defines French Evaluation Framework for Primary Schools

The Ministry of National Education has clarified the framework for French language evaluations in primary schools, introducing qualitative assessments for first-year students and confirming existing protocols for fourth-year pupils. This initiative aims to enhance didactic continuity and pedagogical support nationwide.

Ministry Defines French Evaluation Framework for Primary Schools

The Ministry of National Education has issued a complementary circular, dated November 3, 2026, providing clarity and revised directives for French language evaluations in primary schools across Algeria. This measure aims to resolve previous uncertainties for educational teams and student families, establishing clear pedagogical requirements uniformly applicable to both public and private institutions nationwide and reinforcing the stability of the national curriculum.

Specifically, the ministry confirmed that the summative evaluation for French language in the fourth year primary (4e AP) will proceed as planned from the first trimester of the 2026-2027 school year, maintaining existing scales and protocols. This continuity is justified by the students' foundational knowledge acquired during their third-year primary studies. Concurrently, a structural reform is introduced for first-year primary students, transitioning from numerical assessments to a qualitative, descriptive evaluation method over all three trimesters. Teachers will now record precise observations of skill mastery, guided by standardized grids annexed to the circular to ensure consistent practices across schools.

To support these pedagogical developments, an urgent instruction has been dispatched to primary education inspectors. They are tasked with promptly convening specialized study days for preparatory course teachers to familiarize them with qualitative observation tools. The objective is to effectively utilize evaluation reports to identify learning difficulties early, adjust teaching approaches, and implement essential remediation sessions, thereby ensuring the academic success of every primary school student.
