New Projects Drive Algerian Gas Production to 10 bcf/day

Algeria's natural gas production is projected to reach an average of 10 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/day) in 2026. This forecast represents a 1.6 percent increase compared to the 2025 average of 9.84 bcf/day, signaling the first annual rise since 2023. This positive outlook is primarily driven by new development projects entering production, alongside strategic efforts to counteract natural declines in older fields.

Recent discoveries made in 2025 are also contributing to this optimistic forecast. Specifically, the Tin Fouye Tabankort field development has commenced operations this year, with estimates suggesting it will contribute approximately 2 percent to Algeria's daily production. Additionally, the Ain Amenas 2 development project, recognized as one of the nation's largest wet gas initiatives, has also begun operations, encompassing four fields characterized by a methane content below 85 percent.

In parallel with these new developments, comprehensive expansion and development programs are currently underway at Hassi R'Mel, Algeria's largest gas field. These initiatives are designed to significantly augment the field's reserves with an additional 121 billion cubic meters of dry gas and 7 million tons of condensates. These collective efforts align with Algeria's broader strategy to elevate its overall natural gas production capacity to 200 billion cubic meters annually.

Half of the targeted 200 billion cubic meters of natural gas is intended for export, a move poised to solidify Algeria's standing in international energy markets. Further supporting these projections, calculations from an energy research unit indicate that Algeria's average natural gas production from January to August 2026 surpassed 10 bcf/day, reaching approximately 10.36 bcf/day. Additionally, monthly data from the Joint Organisations Data Initiative (JODI) shows that August production rose to 9.90 bcf/day, compared to 9.52 bcf/day during the same month in 2025.
