Private Schools Transition to Algerian National Programs

Algeria has implemented new regulations for private education, aiming to reinforce national educational standards and cultural identity. An executive decree, published in the official gazette, mandates that private schools exclusively apply national educational programs determined by the Ministry of National Education. This measure strictly prohibits the teaching of foreign curricula, ensuring a unified approach to education across the country's private institutions.

The decree further stipulates that instruction must be delivered in Arabic across all disciplines and educational levels, with the exception of foreign language courses. This policy underscores the nation's commitment to its official language within the educational framework. Additionally, private schools are now required to use only textbooks and pedagogical materials approved by the Ministry of National Education, and their denominations must be in the official national language, free from ideological connotations or foreign references, aligning with the general objectives of the national educational system.

To ensure comprehensive oversight, the new framework imposes strict conditions on agreements with foreign entities, requiring prior written authorization from the Minister of National Education, and consultation with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Interior. Acceptance of foreign funding or donations also necessitates ministerial approval, and private establishments must annually declare their funding sources. Furthermore, all private schools are now required to obtain accreditation from the Ministry of National Education before commencing operations, with specific criteria for founders and pedagogical directors, including Algerian nationality and adherence to professional ethics. Recruitment conditions for staff must also mirror those of the public sector, ensuring consistent educational quality.
