South-West Water Transfer Project Study Nears Completion

The "South-South" water transfer project, a significant initiative for Algeria's South-West provinces, has reached a 90% completion rate in its study phase. This substantial progress underscores the nation's commitment to bolstering water security and supporting regional development. Local and national authorities are relying on this project to address water needs across Beni Abbas, Bechar, and Tindouf, with an anticipated daily transfer of 160,000 cubic meters.

Tindouf province is projected to receive the largest share, with approximately 120,000 cubic meters of water daily. This allocation is vital for reinforcing the province's water resources and sustaining its economic and mining endeavors, including the primary processing plants for iron ore at Gara Djebilet. The water, sourced from the Ougrout capture field in Timimoun province, is also intended to supply residential areas situated along National Road 50, further enhancing the region's infrastructure.

Regarded as the largest water transfer project in Algeria's history, the initiative spans over 1000 kilometers, with a 540-kilometer segment traversing Tindouf province. Its inclusion in a supplementary program for Tindouf, allocated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, highlights its strategic importance. Representatives from the National Water Resources Agency have conducted site visits and technical meetings to finalize project settings, paving the way for its implementation and ensuring robust water security to match the economic and developmental transformations anticipated in the South-West.
