Algeria Launches Major Reforms to Boost Tomato Production and Stabilize Prices

Algeria’s Minister of Internal Trade and Market Regulation and the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Yassine Walid, co-chaired a national conference dedicated to the tomato sector, bringing together officials, producers, and processors from 31 wilayas, alongside the President of the National Chamber of Agriculture.

The Agriculture Minister praised the sector’s remarkable progress, noting that Algeria has successfully eliminated tomato imports — particularly industrial tomatoes — thanks to sustained state support and producers’ accumulated expertise.

The Trade Minister told dzwatch that the tomato sector is strategic and must be strengthened through tighter market regulation, improved distribution mechanisms, and crackdowns on illegal practices threatening price stability.

Key measures announced include a new executive decree to streamline farmer card access, promotion of agricultural cooperatives, local hybrid seed production to cut costs, and dedicated agro-industrial zones managed by the National Investment Promotion Agency. Both ministers affirmed this initiative reinforces national food security and ensures sustainable supply and price stability.
