ALGIERS — Algeria signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, aimed at strengthening efforts to reduce methane emissions and studying the potential for green hydrogen development within state oil company Sonatrach.

This agreement falls within the framework of strengthening the partnership between Algeria and UN bodies to support the national strategy for climate governance and sustainable energy transition. The program provides for the deployment of advanced technologies to capture greenhouse gases and the technical and economic evaluation of national capabilities for green hydrogen production through Sonatrach.

The joint initiative will also focus on capacity building and expert technical assistance to support Sonatrach's long-term environmental roadmap. By integrating state of the art monitoring tools and international best practices, the project aims to optimize energy efficiency across the upstream and downstream hydrocarbon operations while preparing the national industry for the global shift toward lowncarbon hydrogen exports.

This initiative confirms Algeria's commitment to modernizing its energy infrastructure, decarbonizing its oil and gas sector, and establishing itself as a key regional player in the field of clean and renewable energies.
