MC Alger Opens Champions League Second Round
MC Alger, Algeria’s sole representative in the Champions League, embarks on its second preliminary round campaign today. The club aims to secure group stage qualification, beginning with an away match against Nigerian champions Enugu Rangers.

MC Alger, Algeria's sole representative in the prestigious African Champions League, is set to commence its second preliminary round campaign today. The Algiers-based club will face Nigerian champions Enugu Rangers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium, with a clear objective to achieve a favorable result away from home. This initial match is crucial for establishing an advantage ahead of the return leg, thereby bolstering their prospects for advancing to the competition's group stage.
MC Alger demonstrated strong form in the previous round, securing passage after a goalless draw in Niamey against AS Nigelec, followed by a decisive 5-0 victory in the return fixture. Their current opponents, Enugu Rangers, also progressed, but required a penalty shootout win (5-4) against Beninese side Sobemap, after two matches both concluded with a 1-1 scoreline. This contrast highlights MC Alger's assertive performance in the opening phase of the competition.
The task ahead is significant, as Enugu Rangers claimed the Nigerian championship last season and currently leads their domestic league with 17 points from eight matches, including five victories, two draws, and one defeat. Despite MC Alger's recent 1-1 league draw against ASO Chlef and the absence of key players such as Kohili Benahmed, Mohamed Benkhemassa, Merouane Khelif, and captain Ayoub Abdellaoui, the coaching staff, led by Tunisian Khaled Ben Yahia, is confident in the squad's depth to address these challenges and ensure a competitive showing on the continental stage.
