French Politician Royal Rebukes Press on Algerian Sovereignty

Ségolène Royal, a candidate in the socialist primary and former French minister, recently delivered a strong appeal for significant diplomatic and economic rapprochement with Algeria during an appearance on France Inter. She presented a humanist and sovereignist perspective on international relations, encouraging France to move past critical stances to forge a mutually beneficial partnership with Algeria.
When questioned about the political characterization of the Algerian government, Ms. Royal firmly refused to engage with restrictive interpretations. She asserted that "It is not for me to politically qualify a country. It is up to the Algerian people to define themselves," underscoring respect for national sovereignty as a fundamental principle. She also declined to stigmatize Algeria regarding specific judicial matters, noting that all nations, including France, encounter internal challenges and contradictions, and advocated for a necessary detachment from external governance lessons.
Ms. Royal underscored Algeria's undisputed international standing, highlighting its capacity to engage in dialogue on equal terms with the highest global authorities. She cited the visit of the Pope to Algeria as an indicator of the state's legitimacy and pointed to the active engagement of major European powers, including Spain, Italy, and Germany, whose energy ministers have recently traveled to Algiers to establish strategic alliances.
Furthermore, Ms. Royal presented compelling arguments for economic co-development, describing the re-establishment of fluid diplomatic relations as a sound decision. She emphasized the critical opportunity for France to import Algerian gas and collaborate on the significant green hydrogen projects initiated by Algeria, expressing confidence that such partnerships would support French businesses. She concluded her remarks by advocating for empathy over tensions, calling for a robust and respectful union with Algeria.
