Government Accelerates Grand South Railway Mega-Project

The Algerian government is accelerating the railway mega-project in the Grand South, a strategic infrastructure initiative. This development follows a Government Council meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, which focused on the significant undertaking. The project is considered a top priority within the public works sector, signaling a dedicated push for its rapid implementation.
The acceleration comes in response to instructions issued by the President of the Republic during a Council of Ministers meeting on October 4, 2026. These directives called for the immediate launch of railway projects covering critical sections, including Laghouat, El Meniaâ, In Salah, and Tamanrasset. The government has since reviewed the progress of on-site procedures, focusing on preparing construction areas and deploying the necessary resources to commence works within the stipulated timelines.
A primary objective of this initiative is the overall acceleration of construction operations, with a target set for the complete delivery of the entire project by the end of 2028. This comprehensive railway network is integral to the governmental roadmap, which emphasizes specific efforts for the development of the Grand South, contributing to regional progress and connectivity.
