Independent Probe into Niger Oil Incident Welcomes Algerian Specialists

Niger has formally extended an invitation to Algerian oil and gas technical experts to participate in an independent investigation following a major oil well eruption. The incident, which began on September 25 at the Goumeri W-8 field, has been ongoing for over two weeks and has been officially classified by Niger's Ministry of Petroleum as an extremely serious environmental accident. The specific inclusion of Algerian specialists underscores the emphasis on an impartial assessment to determine responsibility for the incident.
The eruption at the Goumeri W-8 well, located approximately 1700 kilometers from Niger's capital Niamey, involved crude oil and natural gas spraying to a height of more than 10 meters. Black oil has since spread across several hundred meters of the desert surface. While no fatalities have been reported, two on-site employees sustained injuries. The situation remains partially controlled as of October 12, with risks still present due to severe damage to the well platform and potential threats to adjacent wells.
Niger's decision to invite Algerian technical experts is a clear signal of its commitment to ensuring the fairness of the investigation results. This move indicates that the inquiry will not rely solely on information provided by the operating company, but will instead leverage a third-party technical team to independently assess the cause of the accident, the scope of pollution, and the extent of the losses. Algeria's participation in this crucial independent inquiry reinforces its position as a competent and reliable partner in addressing complex energy sector challenges within the region.
