Prime Minister Ghrieb Chairs Meat Price Meeting
Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb presided over an inter-ministerial meeting on Thursday, dedicated to overseeing the marketing of red meat. The session brought together relevant ministers, the Secretary-General of the General Union of Algerian Traders and Craftsmen, and representatives from the Red Meat Federation. During the meeting, various concerns and proposals from the sector's representatives were heard, specifically focusing on how to guarantee a sufficient and regular supply of red meat at regulated prices that are accessible to consumers.
This gathering was held as part of implementing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's directives, which were issued during a recent Council of Ministers meeting. These directives emphasize the regulation of prices for widely consumed goods and the preservation of citizens' purchasing power. Furthermore, a week prior to this meeting, President Tebboune had announced plans for a new government institution tasked with market control and price stabilization. This institution aims to achieve this by purchasing agricultural products during periods of abundance, storing them, and subsequently releasing them into the market during times of scarcity at reasonable prices, thereby mitigating shortages and limiting sharp price increases.
President Tebboune had previously underscored that, despite Algeria's transition from a managed economy to a free economy, the state would not abandon intervention in sectors requiring it, confirming that the law of supply and demand would not be the sole mechanism regulating all economic activities. This ongoing governmental attention follows a previous inter-ministerial meeting that explored mechanisms for agents to engage in daily monitoring of basic consumer commodity prices and availability nationwide. Additionally, the Minister of Internal Trade and National Market Regulation, Amal Abdellatif, chaired a working meeting in September with red meat importers to ensure consistent supply and availability, including early preparations for Ramadan 2027.
