Public Campaign Targets Carbon Monoxide Risks in Tizi Ouzou

Sonelgaz has launched a comprehensive public awareness campaign in Tizi Ouzou aimed at preventing carbon monoxide poisoning. This initiative seeks to educate households and encourage vigilance regarding the inherent risks associated with the improper use of natural gas, particularly as the winter season and its accompanying lower temperatures approach. The campaign underscores the critical importance of combating carbon monoxide, often referred to as a "silent killer" due to its annual toll.
As part of this proactive effort, Sonelgaz highlighted that 663,726 carbon monoxide detectors have already been installed across 331,863 homes, reflecting a 73.40% installation rate within the region. The utility company is actively encouraging remaining households that have not yet equipped their residences with these potentially life-saving devices to come forward and express their interest. Furthermore, the campaign extends a call to both individual citizens and public and private real estate developers to implement crucial safety interventions.
Key recommendations disseminated through the campaign include the regular sweeping of chimneys, thorough inspection of burnt gas evacuation ducts within residential properties, and verifying the operational status of carbon monoxide detectors, including battery checks and replacements where necessary. Additional advice emphasizes the importance of maintaining gas appliances, specifically water heaters and heating units, alongside meticulous checks of all piping, connections, and internal gas installations. Households equipped with crawl spaces and gas network risers are particularly urged to ensure adequate ventilation to further mitigate risks during periods of increased indoor heating.
