Water Sector Receives 895 Billion Dinars for 2027

Algeria has allocated nearly 895 billion dinars to its water sector for the year 2027, as detailed in the state budget project. This substantial investment underpins the nation's commitment to achieving comprehensive water security and ensuring fair distribution for all citizens. According to irrigation expert Abdelkader Barbash, Algeria has already accomplished a "field miracle" in water provision through significant efforts in seawater desalination and dam construction, setting the stage for further strategic advancements.

The 2027 budget reflects a strategic pivot from mere water production to enhancing delivery efficiency and equity, emphasizing the integration of modern management systems, digitalization, and artificial intelligence. This forward-looking approach is designed to optimize water distribution to citizens and new urban areas, addressing the challenge of efficient supply. The vision includes transforming scientific research into practical field applications through collaboration with startups and innovative companies, alongside the implementation of smart solutions for system modernization and rehabilitation.

Major projects are slated to commence in January 2027, with completion targeted by December 2028 or 2029, illustrating a precise institutional commitment to project timelines. These include critical connection works from new desalination plants in Mersa Ben M'hidi, Tlemcen, and Mostaganem, alongside water transfer initiatives from the Beni Haroun system to Biskra. Significant funds are also earmarked for potable water supply to Tebessa and Souk Ahras from the Ouldjet M'lag dam, and for rehabilitation and treatment improvements at the Sidi Yaacoub Chlef water treatment plant. Additionally, the agricultural sector will benefit from a 30 billion dinar project for irrigation development in the Rmila area of Ouled Fadhel, covering 10,850 hectares, aiming to rationalize agricultural water use and mitigate pressure on surface and groundwater resources, aligning with national food and water security goals.
