Algerian-Ethiopian Joint Committee: Strengthening Strategic Partnership and Enriching Bilateral Legal Framework

Addis Ababa – The fifth session of the Algerian-Ethiopian Joint Committee convened on Sunday evening in Addis Ababa, co-chaired by Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, and his Ethiopian counterpart, Gedion Timotios.

Minister Attaf was accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising senior officials representing at least ten ministerial sectors and national bodies. The committee’s meeting follows decisions made by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during their February meeting in Addis Ababa, particularly regarding the need to solidify and expand the strategic partnership into economic fields.

According to observers, both sides largely succeeded in achieving the session’s objectives, whether in enhancing political coordination, diversifying bilateral cooperation, or enriching the framework of agreements governing relations between the two countries.

On the political level, the joint statement adopted by both parties demonstrated alignment in views and positions on regional, continental, and international issues of mutual interest, underpinned by their steadfast commitment to the principles of the African Union’s Constitutive Act and the purposes of the United Nations Charter.

Regarding bilateral cooperation, the committee’s work yielded tangible and ambitious outcomes, identifying clear priorities for the Algerian-Ethiopian partnership in the coming phase, particularly in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food industries, agriculture, energy, mining, and startups. These priorities were set based on the complementary economic potentials of both nations and their respective developmental aspirations, aiming to establish a solid foundation for a promising economic partnership between two influential African countries.

To support this momentum, both parties enriched the bilateral legal framework by signing 13 legal texts during the fifth session, with a significant focus on economic fields like pharmaceuticals, investment promotion, agriculture, energy, mining, and startups.

The human element also received special attention through the signing of memoranda of understanding and executive programs in higher education, sports, and culture, reflecting both sides’ belief that fostering friendship and interaction between the Algerian and Ethiopian peoples is a cornerstone for advancing their strategic partnership.
