Algeria is preparing to launch a new dam project in the Bechar province, aimed at enhancing irrigation and mitigating flood risks. The announcement was made by the Minister of Water Resources, Taha Derbal, in Algiers on Thursday, October 9th, 2025.
The proposed dam will be constructed on the Oued El Abied (White River) in Bechar. According to Minister Derbal, the project is currently in the planning and registration phase. Its primary purpose is to provide a reliable water source for irrigation, bolstering agricultural activities in the region. Furthermore, the dam will play a crucial role in protecting the area from potential floods, safeguarding infrastructure and communities.
During his address, Minister Derbal also highlighted the significant improvements in the supply of potable water to the city of Bechar. He attributed these improvements to ongoing efforts and investments in water infrastructure. He stated that the positive results observed in Bechar will serve as a model for similar initiatives in other provinces across Algeria.
“We are witnessing a tangible improvement in the availability of drinking water in Bechar, and we are committed to replicating this success in other wilayas [provinces],” Minister Derbal affirmed.
The construction of the dam in Bechar represents a significant investment in the region’s long-term sustainability. By providing a stable water source for agriculture, the project aims to enhance food security and create economic opportunities for local communities. The flood control measures will also contribute to the overall resilience of the region, protecting it from the devastating impacts of natural disasters.
The project aligns with Algeria’s broader strategy to improve water resource management and address the challenges posed by climate change. The government is actively pursuing various initiatives, including the construction of new dams, the rehabilitation of existing water infrastructure, and the promotion of water conservation practices. These efforts are crucial for ensuring a sustainable water supply for future generations and supporting the country’s economic development.
The Bechar dam project is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s agricultural sector, leading to increased crop yields and improved livelihoods for farmers. It will also contribute to the overall economic growth of the province by creating employment opportunities during the construction phase and beyond. The project underscores Algeria’s commitment to investing in its water resources and building a more resilient and sustainable future for its citizens.
