Tunisia’s Tourism Boom: Over 2 Million Algerians Visit in 2025

Tunisia is experiencing a surge in tourism, with Algerian visitors leading the charge. According to the Tunisian National Tourist Office, over two million Algerians crossed the border into Tunisia during the first eight months of 2025 (January to August). This impressive figure represents approximately one-third of the total foreign tourists visiting the country, which exceeded six million during the same period.

The influx of Algerian tourists highlights the strong ties and close proximity between the two North African nations. Tunisia has long been a popular destination for Algerians seeking relaxation, cultural experiences, and affordable vacations. The diverse attractions of Tunisia, from its stunning Mediterranean beaches and historical sites like Carthage to its vibrant markets and delicious cuisine, continue to draw visitors from across the region.

The Tunisian National Tourist Office also reported a slight increase of 0.6% in Algerian tourist numbers compared to the same period in 2024. While this increase is modest, the overall number remains significant, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Tunisia to Algerian travelers. The total number of foreign tourists visiting Tunisia saw a more substantial increase, exceeding 8% compared to the previous year, indicating a broader recovery and growth in the tourism sector.

Tourists from the Maghreb region, including Algeria, Morocco, and Libya, constitute a significant portion of Tunisia’s tourism market. They account for 52% of all foreign tourists, totaling around 3.72 million visitors. European tourists also contribute substantially, with approximately 2.2 million visitors. French tourists lead the European contingent, with over 800,000 arrivals.

Beyond its traditional markets, Tunisia is also witnessing growing interest from Asian travelers. The number of Japanese tourists visiting Tunisia has increased by 35%, while Chinese tourist numbers have risen by over 15% compared to the same period last year. This surge in Asian tourism reflects Tunisia’s efforts to diversify its tourism base and attract visitors from new and emerging markets. The Tunisian government is actively promoting the country’s attractions in Asia, highlighting its unique cultural heritage and natural beauty.

The strong performance of the tourism sector is crucial for the Tunisian economy. Tourism provides employment opportunities, generates revenue, and supports various related industries. The Tunisian government is committed to further developing the tourism sector by investing in infrastructure, improving services, and promoting sustainable tourism practices. The continuous flow of Algerian tourists, coupled with the growing interest from other regions, bodes well for the future of Tunisian tourism.
