Algeria Eyes Asian Investment for Transport & Infrastructure Boost

Algeria is strengthening its ties with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to boost its transport and infrastructure sectors. The Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, Said Saayoud, recently met with an AIIB delegation led by its President, Jin Liqun, to discuss potential collaborations. The meeting underscored Algeria’s commitment to upgrading its infrastructure and leveraging international partnerships to achieve its economic goals.

The discussions centered around strategic areas of cooperation, with a particular focus on developing Algeria’s transportation network. Key areas highlighted were railway infrastructure, port facilities, and air transport. Minister Saayoud outlined Algeria’s current strategy for the sector, emphasizing the importance of enhancing transport infrastructure across land, sea, and air. He noted the expected positive socio-economic impact of these infrastructure projects in the short and medium term. These projects are seen as crucial for driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for Algerian citizens.

Furthermore, Minister Saayoud emphasized the economic dynamism of several Algerian regions, particularly in agriculture, industry, and energy. He also pointed to a significant increase in investment, especially in the mining sector. This economic activity necessitates a modern and efficient transport network. Upgrading, expanding, and developing the railway and road networks is therefore a national priority. The minister also highlighted the importance of modernizing and developing Algeria’s port network to align with the country’s evolving economic vision. The efficient movement of goods through the ports is crucial for facilitating trade and supporting economic growth.

The AIIB President expressed his admiration for Algeria’s economic potential, noting the country’s steady progress towards sustainable and resilient development. He praised the Algerian government’s focus on infrastructure investment, recognizing it as a fundamental driver of comprehensive development. He reaffirmed the AIIB’s commitment to supporting Algeria in its ambitious national development plan. The AIIB sees Algeria as a promising partner in its mission to promote infrastructure development and economic growth across Asia and beyond. This partnership signifies a strong commitment from both sides to fostering sustainable economic development and improving connectivity within Algeria and across the region. The focus on transport and infrastructure highlights the critical role these sectors play in unlocking Algeria’s economic potential and achieving its long-term development goals. The collaboration between Algeria and the AIIB is expected to bring significant investment and expertise to these vital sectors.
