Algiers, October 3, 2025 – Russia is prepared to support institutions in Algeria dedicated to the study of the Russian language, according to statements made by Russian Ambassador to Algeria, Alexei Solomatin. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of strengthening exchange programs and solidifying cooperation between Algerian and Russian universities.
During a visit to the University of Oran 2 “Mohamed Ben Ahmed,” Ambassador Solomatin expressed his willingness to assist Algerian institutions, such as the language institute at the University of Oran 2, which currently hosts 200 students studying Russian. He highlighted the potential for growth through increased exchange opportunities and collaborative initiatives.
The Russian diplomat also conveyed his admiration for Algeria’s rich cultural heritage, stating his intention to encourage Russian tourists to visit Algeria and experience its captivating landscapes.
Ambassador Solomatin’s visit to the University of Oran 2’s language institute coincided with the arrival of four students from Moscow State Linguistic University. These students are participating in an exchange program facilitated by an agreement between the two universities. A second group of four students from the same Russian university is expected to arrive in the coming days.
These Russian students will be studying Arabic, French, English, Law, and International Relations alongside their Algerian counterparts. University of Oran 2 Director Ahmed Chaalal noted that the university has established agreements with Russian universities, including Moscow State University and Chelny University, resulting in student exchange programs for the past two years.
Addressing the Russian Embassy’s interest in promoting tourism in Algeria, Chaalal mentioned that the university is exploring the possibility of providing specialized training in the tourism sector for Russian language students at the University of Oran 2’s language institute. This initiative aims to equip students with the skills necessary to cater to the growing interest from Russian visitors.
