UN Security Council Resolution Decouples Autonomy Plan from Sahrawi Self-Determination

Algiers – A recent United Nations Security Council resolution has effectively decoupled the Moroccan-backed autonomy plan from the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, according to Ahmed Attaf, the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, and African Affairs.

Minister Attaf emphasized that the resolution reaffirms the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to decide their own future in accordance with international law and the UN Charter. This stance directly challenges attempts to link the concept of autonomy to the exercise of this fundamental right.

The Minister’s statement highlights Algeria’s continued commitment to supporting the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. He further asserted that the resolution reinforces the international community’s commitment to a just and lasting solution to the Western Sahara conflict, one that respects the principles of international law and the aspirations of the Sahrawi people.

DZWatch understands that this development marks a significant shift in the international discourse surrounding the Western Sahara issue. The resolution’s emphasis on self-determination as a distinct and primary right could potentially pave the way for renewed negotiations and a more equitable resolution to the long-standing conflict.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad has yet to release a full statement on the implications of the resolution, but sources suggest that further analysis is underway to determine the next steps in Algeria’s diplomatic efforts regarding the Western Sahara.

This development is being closely watched by regional and international actors, as the Western Sahara issue remains a key point of contention and a significant factor in regional stability.
