US Grants Hungary One-Year Sanctions Waiver on Russian Oil & Gas

Washington, D.C. – The United States has granted Hungary a one-year exemption from American sanctions related to the use of Russian oil and gas. The decision follows a direct appeal from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban during a meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington.

The exemption arrives after the U.S. imposed sanctions last month on Russian oil giants Lukoil and Rosneft concerning their activities related to Ukraine. These sanctions included potential penalties for entities in countries that purchase oil from these companies.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Orban reportedly explained to President Trump the critical importance of Russian energy supplies to Hungary. He emphasized the potential consequences for the Hungarian people and economy should these supplies be disrupted.

President Trump acknowledged Hungary’s unique situation, stating, “We are looking into it, because their situation is very different in terms of obtaining oil and gas from other areas… As you know, they don’t have… the advantage of the sea. It’s a great, big country, but they don’t have seaports.”

He also remarked on the broader European reliance on Russian energy, adding, “But many European countries have been buying oil and gas from Russia for years… And I said: what exactly is that all about?”

The waiver underscores the complexities of implementing energy-related sanctions, particularly for countries heavily reliant on Russian supplies. The coming year will be crucial for Hungary to explore alternative energy sources and reduce its dependence on Russian oil and gas.
