Algiers, Algeria – Twelve people have died and 455 others were injured in a series of traffic accidents across several Algerian provinces in the last 48 hours, according to a report released Saturday by the Civil Protection services.
The deadliest incident occurred in the Medea province, where a collision between two vehicles on National Route 8 in the municipality of El Azizia resulted in two fatalities and eight injuries. The Civil Protection teams responded to the scene, providing immediate assistance and transferring the injured to local hospitals.
In separate incidents, Civil Protection units were dispatched to extinguish two fires in the provinces of Mila and M’Sila. Details regarding the cause of these fires are still under investigation.
Meanwhile, in Setif, paramedics from the Civil Protection provided first aid to three individuals who suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning. The victims were reportedly affected by fumes emanating from a water heater inside their home. Authorities are urging residents to ensure proper ventilation and regular maintenance of heating appliances to prevent similar incidents.
The Civil Protection services also reported significant activity in combating wildfires. During the same 48-hour period, firefighters successfully extinguished 40 fires across various provinces, preventing further damage to forests, scrubland, agricultural crops, and palm groves. The ongoing efforts to contain and prevent wildfires remain a top priority for the authorities, especially during the dry season.
Authorities are appealing to drivers to exercise caution on the roads and adhere to traffic regulations to minimize the risk of accidents. An investigation is underway to determine the causes of the reported traffic incidents.
