Algeria’s Electricity Sector Achieves Record Performance in 2025

Algiers – Algeria’s electricity sector has achieved remarkable milestones in 2025, demonstrating significant progress in energy security and infrastructure development. Official figures reveal a total electricity production capacity of 27,000 megawatts (MW), coupled with a national coverage rate nearing 100 percent.

The number of electricity subscribers in Algeria has reached 12.5 million, reflecting the extensive expansion of the distribution network to both urban and rural areas. This near-complete coverage underscores the success of national efforts to ensure universal access to electricity for all citizens.

Further highlighting Algeria’s energy surplus, the country is currently exporting 500 MW of electricity to Tunisia. This contribution significantly supports Tunisia’s energy needs, strengthening Maghreb energy cooperation and solidifying Algeria’s role as a key regional energy provider.

Looking ahead, Algeria aims to add 15,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2035. This ambitious target is part of a comprehensive energy transition plan designed to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to global climate change mitigation efforts. This strategy includes the development of solar and wind energy projects, as well as investments in green hydrogen technologies, aligning with Algeria’s international commitments and opening new avenues for exports and strategic partnerships.

In related news, Sonelgaz continues to implement its national plan to enhance the high-pressure gas transmission network, ensuring its performance meets international safety and environmental standards.
