French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has indicated a potential visit to Algeria, suggesting it could pave the way for renewed dialogue between the two nations. Speaking on BFMTV and RMC, Nunez highlighted the possibility of improved relations following a period of tension.
Nunez specifically praised Algeria’s decision to release writer Boualem Sansal, calling it a “humanitarian gesture” by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune that carries positive implications for bilateral ties. He emphasized that a confrontational approach with Algeria had proven ineffective, advocating for a more pragmatic vision based on dialogue and mutual understanding.
The Minister also acknowledged Germany’s role in facilitating a resolution regarding Sansal, describing Berlin as a “trusted third party” that contributed to easing tensions between Paris and Algiers. He noted that President Emmanuel Macron recently held discussions with both President Tebboune and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, signaling a shared desire to de-escalate and prioritize cooperation.
“My anticipated visit to Algeria could open a new page of dialogue,” Nunez stated, expressing hope that it would restore trust and create opportunities for renewed collaboration on matters of mutual interest. This comes after months of diplomatic stagnation and tension.
The release of Sansal, according to Nunez, represents a preliminary step toward a gradual improvement in relations between Algeria and France. He expressed optimism that his prospective visit to Algeria would serve as a starting point for constructive dialogue. DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing story.
