Minister Arkab Meets with Parliamentary Group to Discuss Energy and Mining Concerns

Algiers, October 14, 2025 – Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, held a meeting today with the head and members of the Liberal Parliamentary Group of the Council of the Nation at the ministry headquarters.

The delegation, led by Lazreg Batahar, included Boughanem Abdelkrim, Laarab Youssef, Abdelhamid Boucherm, and Ben Abid Amar. The Secretary of State to the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, in charge of Mines, Karima Bekir Tafer, and ministry officials were also present.

Discussions centered on concerns raised by members of the Council of the Nation regarding the hydrocarbons and mining sectors. Several key issues were addressed, including the progress and future development of seawater desalination projects and their vital role in ensuring the nation’s water security, particularly in light of decreasing rainfall. The need for sustainable measures to guarantee the availability of potable water was emphasized.

The meeting also covered activities and projects related to mining across various regions of the country, focusing on quarries, sandpits, and new mining investments.

Furthermore, major hydrocarbon projects were discussed, including the distribution of petroleum products throughout the country, the rehabilitation of butane gas cylinder filling centers, and projects aimed at enhancing storage capacities, particularly for LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). The status of large-scale petrochemical projects, notably the Hassi Messaoud refinery, was also reviewed.

During the meeting, Minister Arkab provided explanations and clarifications on the issues raised, emphasizing the sector’s commitment and that of its institutions to address the identified needs and support local development. He assured the delegation that all proposals and concerns would be carefully considered and studied within the framework of joint collaboration with various bodies and institutions, to ensure sustainable local development and meet the aspirations of citizens.
