UN Security Council to Vote on US Gaza Peace Plan

The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to vote next Monday on a US-drafted resolution supporting President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza, diplomatic sources revealed Saturday. The United States, alongside several partner nations including Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, urged the Security Council on Friday to swiftly adopt the resolution.

These nations, along with the UAE, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Jordan, have voiced their collective support for the American resolution, which proposes the establishment of an international stabilization force. They expressed hope for its rapid adoption.

The United States officially initiated negotiations within the 15-member Security Council last week regarding the text, which aims to build upon the ceasefire in the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas and endorse the Trump plan. Washington and its partners affirmed in a joint statement that the plan offers a practical pathway towards peace and stability, not only between Israelis and Palestinians but for the entire region.

The US draft resolution welcomes the creation of a “Peace Council,” a transitional governing body for Gaza theoretically headed by Trump, with a mandate extending until the end of 2027. The resolution also authorizes member states to form a “temporary international stabilization force” to work with Israel, Egypt, and a newly trained Palestinian police force to help secure border areas and disarm the Gaza Strip. The resolution also alludes to the possibility of a future Palestinian state, a departure from previous drafts.

The joint statement emerged as Russia circulated a competing draft resolution to council members. The Russian proposal does not include the creation of a Peace Council or the immediate deployment of an international force in Gaza. It welcomes the initiative that led to the ceasefire but does not mention Trump. Instead, it calls on the UN Secretary-General to identify options for implementing the peace plan’s provisions and to report on the feasibility of deploying an international stabilization force in Gaza.

The United States has described the Gaza ceasefire as fragile, warning of the risks of failing to adopt its draft. The US envoy to the UN, Mike Waltz, wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that any refusal to support the resolution constitutes a vote for the continuation of Hamas rule or a return to war with Israel, condemning the region and its people to perpetual conflict. Any deviation from this path, whether from those seeking to play political games or to revive the past, is unacceptable.
