Algeria Aims for 15,000 MW Renewable Energy by 2035

Algiers – Algeria is targeting the production of 15,000 megawatts of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2035, according to Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy, Mourad Adjjal. This ambitious goal was announced during the first national meeting of energy and renewable energy sector officials held this Saturday.

The meeting, which included Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines Mohamed Arkab, and Secretary of State in charge of Mines Karima Tafer, served as a platform to evaluate past achievements and define strategies for the future. Minister Adjjal emphasized the importance of transparency and a clear roadmap for the sector.

“This meeting is part of an ongoing process to reorganize the sector and adapt it to the state’s strategic orientations,” Adjjal stated. He highlighted the sector’s crucial role in Algeria’s energy security and its transition towards a more diversified economy.

The Minister outlined key aspects of the new sector roadmap, emphasizing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s commitment to improving public services and ensuring access to electricity and gas for all citizens. Meeting the energy needs of the industrial and agricultural sectors is also a priority.

Adjjal also detailed the ongoing restructuring of the Ministry, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of both the central administration of the energy sector and the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines. This includes the preparation of executive decrees to clarify roles, strengthen governance, and improve monitoring effectiveness.

This initiative also encompasses a draft circular regulating relations between energy and mining directorates across different provinces, facilitating a smooth transition to the new administrative model. The long-term energy objectives, particularly the 15,000 MW renewable energy project by 2035, are already underway with the launch of the first phase.
