Algeria Ranks High in Arab Barley Production

Algeria secures a prominent position in barley production for the 2024/2025 agricultural season, according to recent data from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service. The figures reveal Algeria’s significant presence in barley production, reaching 1.2 million tons. This achievement places Algeria second among Arab nations, despite regional climate challenges.

The American statistics indicate that Algeria’s barley production level secures it the 16th position globally, alongside Syria, which achieved the same volume. This performance reflects the resilience of Algerian agriculture in maintaining balance despite fluctuating rainfall and challenging seasons, especially considering barley’s sensitivity to water scarcity.

This progress provides Algeria with an additional margin to enhance its food security, as barley is a fundamental component in livestock feed. This production level allows for improved livestock yields, particularly amidst rising demand for feed in recent years. It also bolsters the country’s agricultural sector.

Iraq maintains its position as the largest Arab barley producer with an output of 1.4 million tons, ranking 15th globally. This strong performance reflects the development of the Iraqi agricultural sector, with expanded irrigated areas and continued support programs for grains. The recorded increase in barley production is a significant gain for livestock farmers in the country.

Syria recorded production equal to Algeria at 1.2 million tons, indicating the resilience of its agricultural sector despite difficult circumstances. Morocco ranked fourth among Arab nations with only 660,000 tons, occupying the 22nd position globally. This decline is attributed to recurring drought crises that have clearly affected the agricultural season. Tunisia and Libya continue to show average production levels, with Tunisia recording 272,000 tons (29th globally) and Libya reaching 100,000 tons.

Algeria’s strong barley production underscores its commitment to agricultural development and food security.
